On this page you’ll find pictures and notes from my 2022 hike across Northern Spain. For my hike I combined the Camino del Norte route from Irun up to Gijón, with the Camino Primitivo which goes from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela. From Santiago, I continued on to Fisterra, where my Camino officially ended.

Camino del Norte: Day 8 – Portugalete to Pobeña
This Camino stage starts in Bilbao and follows the coast to a beach town just before the border between the Basque Country and Cantabria.

Camino del Norte: Day 9 – Pobeña to Oriñón
The hike from Pobeña to Oriñón mostly follows the coast, and features several climbs and descents, but the ocean views make it all worthwhile.

Camino del Norte: Day 10 – Oriñón to Laredo
The steep cliffs between Oriñón and Laredo feature views of the Bay of Biscay on one side, and the rolling Cantabrian mountains on the other.

This section of the Camino del Norte mostly follows coastal gravel trails with the Picos de Europa mountains on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

This section of the Camino del Norte follows along the Asturian coast, weaving between gravel trails, beach coves, and paved country roads.

This day of hiking passes through some semi-industrial areas outside of Gijón with two steep, sustained hill climbs on the way to Avilés.
